The radio in Project colony ship is barely functional. Anyone have a working 80s ford tape deck they are willing to part with?

Failing that, does anyone have a suggestion for a new radio that won’t look grossly out of place? CD preferred (I am a luddite), but aux/usb only is acceptable.

(For those wondering why i want a cassette radio , the plan is to buy cassettes at the flea market to have period tunes)

Something like this might work, AUX (and am/fm radio) but no tapes:

I thought about putting something like that with bluetooth in my ‘72, but never did. With a pickup, I just tossed a bluetooth speaker on the dash whenever I wanted music.

It might be worth talking to these guys. I had them do some repair and rebuilding of a couple of components on my former C4 vettes factory system. The prices were reasonable, the turnaround time was quick and they were one of the few shops out there really specializing in old, factory audio systems.

They also got the digital trip clock too. All of which is now busted.

There’s a few companies that will refurb/recap 80s radios and add an aux port, which might be a good solution. It’s usually like $100-$150.

Too bad, probably not entirely common options.

I remember my mom’s 85 Tempo GLX was almost a fully optioned car, but one thing it lacked was the digital radio, it had just a standard radio/cassette. That irked me.

Suggestion: buy this used on Amazon for $48, then aquire a 6-10 CD changer that you should be able to find just as cheap, if not cheaper.

You could consider buying a small amplifier to hide behind the dash and you’d have aux-in and potential to add bluetooth, walkman, discman via that, haha. I recal l from an article on Jalopnik several years ago that they are pretty cheap and nice and small.

Single DINs are a bitch to find. Normally I’d refer you to my rebuilder, but they no longer do rebuilds. Also remember you need the radio removal tool or you will damage the mounts . Should be a 2 x 8 pin setup on this one.

Any decent salvage yards in your area? I pulled one from a salvage yard to replace the god awful unit the PO put in the Bronco. If not, maybe I can locate one on my next trip to the yard.

Most don’t bother with 30 year old stuff, and it rarely hangs around long before being crushed. S o it is very hit or miss.

I’ll let you know once i exhaust my local options. I definitely appreciate the offer.

Oof. There’s always a shit ton of old GM and Ford trucks both  on  the road and in salvage yards around here. Not much for wagons, but that shouldn’t matter too much in relation to stereos.

I bought several of those Ford-JBL radios for my old Town Car, trying to find one that worked right.

Eventually, I just had someone near me refurbish the original, using one of the others for parts. I still have a few of them, IIRC, at least one of them technically works (and has fresh cassette drive belts), but has weak reception. The others I can’t vouch for, and I have a partially disassembled one with some missing parts.

EDIT: the guy that redid mine is an ex-Navy electronics tech who retired in the ‘80s, and mentioned that those stereos were some of the first civilian radios he ever worked on, and he hadn’t seen one in close to 20 years when I brought mine in. Did a good job though. He works out of a storage unit in lower Delaware, I don’t think he can accept work via mail.
